This past weekend we celebrated PRIDE with parades, parties and events that extol the joy of being yourself. Although we founded Jambo Books to highlight children’s books that feature children of color, diversity encompasses more than just cultural, ethnic and racial diversity. There are wonderful LGBTQIA children’s books that celebrate their families and their journeys. A few of those books highlight the intersection between the LGBT community and communities of color. Some of the books that we’ve read here at Jambo Books and can recommend are listed below:
Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love
My Princess Boy by Cheryl Kilodavis, illustrated by Suzanne DeSimone
I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel, illustrated by Shelagh McNicholas
Sparkle Boy by Leslea Newman, illustrated by Maria Mola
Pink is for Boys by Robb Pearlman, illustrated by Eda Kaban
When’s My Birthday? by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Christian Rob
As we learn about new books that celebrate the marvelous heterogeneity of the human race, we’ll let you know about them. They may not always feature a child of color but they will always be books that bring a part of the human experience that is marginalized to the center.
