Ramadan started on April 12th. Some children will be experiencing their first Ramadan this year.
Karen Katz has written a short and colorful introduction to Ramadan for kids aged 0-5. My First Ramadan explains important aspects of the celebration such as suhoor, fajr, iftar, Maghrib, Eid al-Fitr and Eid mubarak. The little boy who is the narrator of My First Ramadan also importantly reminds readers that Muslims live all over the world and “Islam” means “peace”.
The narrator explains that this is the first Ramadan where he will also participate in fasting. He leads the reader through his day, beginning with the large meal in the morning, suhoor, through prayers, school and the evening meal, iftar. We are then introduced to Eid al-Fitr, the last day of Ramadan and we follow his family through their end of Ramadan celebration. My First Ramadan is a great introduction to Ramada for kids of many ages.
