Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Their mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
Jambo Books was lucky enough to receive two books to review for MCBD. The second is BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, STRONG LITTLE ME! by Hannah Carmona Dias, and illustrated by Dolly Georgieva-Gode.
BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, STRONG LITTLE ME! is at once a proclamation and an affirmation. The protagonist, Lilly, is a vibrant little girl going through a typical day. She plays with children of all different backgrounds, including a boy in a wheelchair who is having fun with everyone else. We see scenes of Lilly and her friends in a park, at school and at home.
Lilly is drawn with cinnamon skin, curly “frizzy, wild” hair, and “freckles all over that dazzle and stun.” Because of her appearance, Lilly faces questions about her heritage and where she is from. Adults and children who have been on the receiving end of the “What are you? Where are you from?” line of questions will identify with Lilly’s firm response. She replies, “I am not a puzzle to figure out. Or a mysterious artifact to learn all about….I’m beautiful, wonderful, strong little me and I don’t need explaining to any degree.”
The book appears to be autobiographical in some respects. The author is a mother and in the book, the mother drawn next to the heroine, Lilly, looks a lot like the author’s picture.
BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, STRONG LITTLE ME! is appropriate for children ages 3-6 years old.
