Multicultural Children’s Book Day: Farmer Falgu Goes to the Kumbh Mela

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom.  Their mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

Jambo Books was lucky enough to receive two books to review for MCBD.  The first is FARMER FALGU GOES TO THE KUMBH MELA by Chitra Soundar, illustrated  by Kanika Nair.

Farmer Falgu is preparing to attend the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This festival, celebrating the sacred rivers of the Hindu religion only takes place once every 12 years. Falgu is looking forward to taking a dip in the sacred river, watching the sudhas and elephants process by and eating delicious treats like jalesi and lassi. But he keeps getting off track to tend to the needs of fellow mela-goers and as a result, he misses the opportunity to partake in anything. However, the story does not leave our generous hero disappointed. A change in plans allows him to see the sights and take the ritual dips in the river. His kindness is repaid to him on the train as his neighbors share their sweets with him. Karma rewards the sacrifices he made in order to show kindness to others.

Through this book, readers can learn about an important festival in Hindu culture and also learn about the foods and treats that are common in that region of India. Readers will be inspired by Farmer Falgu to be kind even when kindness requires a sacrifice.

FARMER FALGU GOES TO THE KUMBH MELA is appropriate for kids from the ages of 3-8.

There are three books in the Farmer Falgu series, FARMER FALGU GOES KITE FLYING, FARMER FALGU GOES ON A TRIPFARMER FALGU GOES TO THE KUMBH MELA, and FARMER FALGU GOES TO THE MARKET.
